Handsome Devil - Knock Yourself Out

Danny Walker – lead singer, guitar
Billie Stevens – guitar, vocals
Keith Morgan – drums, vocals
Brian Wedmore – bass, vocals

“Handsome Devil – In your face rock and roll – loud, unapologetic, and blazing with energy – that’s what we bring – that’s who we are,” boasts lead vocalist/guitarist Danny Walker. With diverse influences including the Clash, Elvis Costello, KISS, Bruce Springsteen, the Ramones, and Tom Petty, Handsome Devil focuses on writing great songs and putting on a kick ass live show. Formed by singer-songwriter/guitarist Danny Walker and guitarist Billie Stevens with powerhouse drummer Keith Morgan in 1999, Handsome Devil began by making the rounds in the club scene in Orange County, California. In January 2001, after cutting some demos and touring regionally, Handsome Devil was signed to RCA records under the Dirty Martini imprint.

Their debut album, Love and Kisses from the Underground (Dirty Martini/RCA/BMG), which was released September 2001, garnered both critical acclaim and the overwhelming approval of fans worldwide. Of the CD, the Los Angeles Times declares, “Handsome Devil’s debut album abounds with hook-filled songs bursting with punk energy, shredding heavy-metal guitar work and even a dash of rap-rock, all of which sounds like a goldmine for modern-rock radio.” Dig Magazine adds, “Love and Kisses From The Underground represents the return of rock 'n roll proper: hook laden, fist-pumping anthems devoid of separatist sub genres and the need for image-critical accessories except, maybe, a Bic lighter.” Supporting their debut with five US Tours, the Warped Tour 2002, an abundance of radio shows, and a live television performance of Makin’ Money on the Craig Kilborn show, Handsome Devil developed into a lean, mean, touring machine exhibiting a ferocious live show, a strong work ethic, and a humble appreciation of their fans. Andy Guy, editor of Anti-Music, reviewed a Handsome Devil show at the Roxy in Hollywood, “From the first moment lead vocalist/guitarist Danny Walker walked on stage with his cohorts, it was sure pandemonium. Keith Morgan attacked the drums with a savage intensity yet he never missed a beat. Billie Stevens held dominance over his side of the stage as he rocked through the set with arms wailing on his six-string.” The Handsome Devil debut CD has sold over 30,000 units to date. Handsome Devil continues to bring their unique brand of no-nonsense, devil-style rock with their sophomore album, Knock Yourself Out, which confidently carries on where Love and Kisses left off. Whether exploring self examination in the gently insightful “Angels on High” (Bound for hell, I sabotage myself, I could use a hand), or escapism in the pop sensible smash “Running” (Traveled far and I shed so many tears, and nothing really scares me more than fear) and the dark anthem “Liquor Store” (It’s too late to try… I’m! rollin’ down to the Liquor Store, I’ll hook up something sweet for the ladies and whiskey for the boys), Handsome Devil songs offer lyrical substance as well as gutsy guitar driven musicality. John Roos of OC Weekly says, “Handsome Devil – An explosive live band – released a noisy collection of rugged pop bliss titled Knock Yourself Out… Several songs on KYO---namely, ‘Angels on High,’ ‘Devil in You,’ and the spooky feeling ‘New Thing’ tackle the complexities—no, make that contradictions—that life throws our way. In a word, Handsome Devil has become, well, angelic.”

Handsome Devil self produced half of the new album, and co-produced the other half with Jeremy Popoff (Lit), with one song, “What You See,” co-produced by veteran rock producer Ed Stasium (The Ramones, Talking Heads). With respect to Handsome Devil taking on a production role in the recording process, guitarist Billie Stevens offers, “Self producing was great because we were able to fully explore ideas without being on a strict time schedule. I believe this opportunity has not only brought us to a new musical level, but has also made best friends a better band.” And Meanstreet Magazine adds, “The Devils returned on their own merits with a sophomore effort, and they’re doing a better job than before – better melodies, more interesting arrangements, and catchier lyrics.” “We’re genuinely excited about sharing Knock Yourself Out with our fans,” Walker notes, “Whether you’re an old Handsome Devil fan or new, get up close and personal with our live show and this record, and I’m sure we’ll leave a scar.” Be good to yourself and pick up Handsome Devil’s Knock Yourself Out.
